Panton Chair
Verner Panton — Vitra, Switzerland
The Panton Chair's flowing S-curve joins back, seat and base. Its history is also a story of changing plastics.
From experiment to production
Verner Panton developed the cantilevered plastic chair with Vitra, bringing it into production in 1967. Materials and manufacturing methods changed over time, so different editions do not necessarily share the same finish or performance.
One continuous silhouette
The back curves into the seat and then down to the floor without a separate frame. Strong colour makes this outline stand out; white or a muted shade gives it a quieter presence.
Choosing a place for it
A simple dining table leaves the shape visible. Check the seat height and legroom before committing to a set. Stacking and outdoor suitability depend on the particular version, rather than the design name alone.
