Eames RAR Rocking Chair

Charles & Ray Eames — Vitra, Switzerland / Herman Miller, USA

The Eames RAR places an armchair shell on wire supports and wooden runners, adding movement to the shell-chair idea.

Part of the Eames family

Charles and Ray Eames explored different bases for their plastic shells. On the RAR, a wire frame connects the armchair shell to two wooden rockers. The design dates from the family's early development around 1950.

Each material has a role

The shell encloses the seat, wire links it to the floor and runners allow rocking. Early fibreglass and later plastic versions differ in material and surface.

Leave rocking clearance

Keep it clear of walls and table edges. A small open corner can work as a place for a brief pause. Try the compact, low seat and check how the runners behave on your floor.
