Eames Molded Plastic Chair

Charles & Ray Eames — Herman Miller, USA

A moulded shell and a choice of bases give the Eames Plastic Chairs their versatility, from dining rooms to occasional workspaces.

A family built around the shell

Charles and Ray Eames developed shells that entered production in fibreglass-reinforced plastic in 1950. Later versions use different plastics, making the exact model relevant to dimensions, finish and material.

The base changes the look

Wooden legs add warmth, while a wire base draws a more graphic outline. Shells with and without arms also create different sitting experiences. Consider the complete combination rather than choosing by colour alone.

Fit the chair to the table

Repeating one shell shape can tie several colours together. Check table clearance and choose glides suited to the floor. For long working days, consider whether the fixed seat position provides the support you need.
