Ball Chair

Eero Aarnio — Eero Aarnio Originals · earlier editions by other makers

Eero Aarnio's Ball Chair makes a small seating nook within a room, with a smooth outer sphere and an upholstered interior.

A sphere becomes a seat

Designed in 1963 and presented internationally in Cologne in 1966, the Ball Chair reflects the period's experiments with large plastic forms.

Two different surfaces

The cutaway sphere screens the seat on either side. Smooth shell and soft lining create a distinct inside and outside. The enclosure changes your view and sense of the room, but it is not a soundproof booth.

Leave room to use it

Allow space to enter and rotate the chair, not just for its diameter. Aim the opening towards a window or conversation area, or turn it aside for a more separate seat. A plain rug can anchor the shape.
